Many of us spend our lives simply passing time from one day to the next, without ever feeling any sense of accomplishment. After awhile, we start to wonder: what is life really all about?
All of us are worthy of living full, exciting lives. As humans, we are built to face challenges, proving our worth through our actions.
For martial artists, living life to the fullest is one of the greatest benefits of practicing martial arts. Not only does it encourage one to embrace any opportunity to unleash their greatness, but it also helps them improve themselves on a continuous basis.
Today, Evolve Daily shares 5 Ways Martial Arts Gives You A Great Life:
For martial artists, every training session is truly character building. Choosing to be patient, admitting defeat and doing it all over again isn’t easy, but that’s what training martial arts is like.
Martial artists understand that training without reflecting on what they’ve learned won’t get them anywhere. They’ll be stuck where they are for a very long time, unable to level up.
By adhering to decisions that are in tune with one’s moral compass, you become not only a better person; you’ll also strengthen your positive self-image.
Nothing builds your confidence more than knowing that you can defend yourself from an attacker or be able to submit someone that is twice your size. Martial arts teaches you techniques that can be applied in real-life self-defense situations.
This confidence one learns from martial arts also translates into personal confidence. Confident people know their worth and what their positive attributes are. The more you embrace your confidence, the easier it will be for everyone to see what a great person you really are.
Martial artists understand that hard work is a must, especially if they want to level up. They know that they have to go above and beyond what is required of a student — drilling after class, taking notes, sparring with advanced students in order to become a better martial artist.
This dedication transfers well into one’s daily life. A good work ethic will take anyone places, giving them a stronger sense of self and a deeper belief in their abilities.
The moment you bump fists with your sparring partner, you become aware that literally anything can happen. There’s a chance he could submit you, even if he’s at a much lower level than you are. And when he does, you realize how unexpected martial arts can be.
Just like martial arts, life is also full of surprises. One day you could be at the top of the world and the next might be the complete opposite. Martial arts teaches you to be OK with it and just embrace it. Everything is a learning experience that will make you a better person in the end.
While you don’t have to be at the peak of fitness to practice martial arts, it certainly encourages you to take care of yourself. If you eat unhealthily, you know it could take a toll on your training. If you don’t sleep well, you’ll feel lethargic the rest of the day.
Martial arts teaches you to reconsider your priorities by aligning them with your martial arts goals. Every serious martial artist knows you can’t level up if you don’t make the effort to maintain a healthy diet or include strength and conditioning to your workout regimen.
It can be easy to forget the many benefits of martial arts, especially if you’ve practiced it for a long time. However, when you reflect on your life and see how much it’s changed because of martial arts, you’re definitely in for a surprise.
So go on and train, be the best version of yourself – not only in martial arts but also in your daily life. Live your life to the fullest with martial arts and eventually, winning in all aspects of life will come naturally.

Martial arts provides a number of excellent health benefits, in addition to instilling discipline and confidence within students. Through improving one’s skills during practice, a student of martial arts will also be able to build a healthier body and, by extension, lifestyle Since health and fitness are closely intertwined, let’s explore 10 of the most common health benefits of martial arts
1. Cardiovascular Health
Meeting the physical activity guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention can be difficult. According to their research, only one in five adults actually meets their suggested amount of exercise. Cardiovascular health, in particular, is very important to manage, as it is closely linked to heart health. Especially during training, drills can really help ramp up one’s heart rate, helping you build cardiovascular endurance and increasing the positive impact of your aerobic exercise.
2. Muscle Tone
Students of martial arts can increase muscle mass and help them become more toned over all. Punching and kicking requires a lot of strength, demanding the muscles in your arms, legs, and core work hard. Muscle mass and metabolism are connected, as the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolic demands become. This means that your body will burn more calories, even while your body is at rest.
3. Weight Loss
As previously mentioned, improving your muscle mass and tone can help improve your metabolism, which can contribute to weight loss. Martial arts is a great form of exercise, especially if you practice two to three times each week. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, each week (roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes).
4. Reflexes
Fast reflexes are required of good martial artists. Whether it’s sparring or fighting in a competition, blocking and dodging the attacks of your opponent is important to every martial artist. Through repetition, your reflex will improve and you’ll notice faster reaction times in all parts of your life. Quick reflexes can help in a number of day-to-day activities, such as driving and cooking.

5. Mobility
Many martial arts disciplines require mobility and agility and practicing martial arts is a terrific way to improve your body’s ability to move faster and more efficiently. Over time, you’ll notice greater speed, especially if your form of martial arts requires a lot of footwork.
6. Strength and Power
While form is important for an effective punch or kick, strength is also needed to ensure that your attack is powerful. Conversely, practicing martial arts will provide you with the opportunity to train your body to become stronger and more formidable. Such martial arts disciplines as Taekwondo require a lot of strength, when it comes to some of its techniques. These kicks, punches, and other moves will increase your entire body’s strength over time. Repetition is another factor that can help improve your body’s musculature.
7. Flexibility
Executing such things as high kicks or dodging attacks requires a lot of flexibility. In addition to that, having a more pliable body can help reduce the likelihood of injury, making flexibility important for any athlete. Certain disciplines – such as MMA and Muay Thai – can help you improve your flexibility since their moves require that of your body.
8. Stability and Coordination
Every martial art requires its students to have good stability and coordination. When it comes to both executing moves and blocking or avoiding attacks, you need a certain amount of awareness and stability to succeed. With practice, you will quickly improve both qualities, particularly during sparring.
9. Blood Pressure
Most types of martial arts require rigorous training that contributes to improved fitness. One of the benefits of engaging in any martial arts practice is improved blood pressure. Especially during training, repetitive movements can behave like high intensity interval training. This type of training will improve your cardiovascular strength, slowing down your resting heart rate and lowering your blood pressure.
10. Mental Health
A number of studies have shown that exercise can help improve your mental health. Martial arts can help relieve you of your daily stressors and help you focus on your task at hand, providing you with the opportunity to get rid of distractions. Keeping active will also trigger your body to release endorphins, reducing the risks of premature death, Martial arts often comes with certain philosophies that help the students learn more about themselves, further promoting self-discipline, healthy competition, and goal-setting.

During the period of 1973, the Rio Cinema in Colombo played movies such as the Chinese Boxer, Un Armed Swordsman and Iron Hand Boxer. These movies were the first experience which the Sri Lankan public had of Chinese Martial Arts. However, the public was unaware and was not able to differentiate the Chinese Martial Arts(Wushu) from the Japanese Martial Arts(Karate). Karate at the time had gained a wide popularity in Sri Lanka and all these movies which featured Chinese Martial Arts were branded as Karate. During the period 1974 and 1975 movies featuring the art of Wushu began becoming popular, thanks to the efforts of Lee Shao Long who was more popularly known as Bruce Lee who brought out the art of Wushu through the Bamboo or Iron curtain in China.
With the art of Wushu, widely gaining popularity in Sri Lanka as Kung-Fu during this period, the so-called instructors of Chinese Boxing and Karate turned their attention towards teaching Kung-Fu as it was becoming a lucrative prospect. Without any form of training or an idea of what Kung-Fu is, there were many so called-instructors who were opening up institutes to teach Kung-Fu. It was during this period in which Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera made a strong resolve to introduce and establish the authentic art of Wushu in Sri Lanka.
In 1975 becoming the first ever Sri Lankan to visit China to train in Wushu, and since then Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera had the privilege of being trained by some of the finest Wushu instructors such as Sifu David Cho, Alexander Caspers, Carl Solomon, Grand Master Willian Cheung, Sifu-Dr. Lai King Chung, Sifu Sun JianQun, SifuTsaoJiQun, Guan Tieyun and Fan Lin Hai.
With a wealth of knowledge in Wushu SifuPrasannaJayaweera established the proper first ever Wushu training institute in Sri Lanka which was the Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy, headquartered in Jayanthipura, Battaramulla.
In 1986 subsequent to Wushu being declared as an international sport by the Peoples Repulic of China, through its embassies in various countries China invited professional Wushu instructors to visit China and form the International Wushu Federation. Sifu PrasannaJ ayaweera was the unanimous choice for Sri Lanka. It was at this event that a decision was made to establish the South Asian Wushu Federation. Since then Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera and athletes from the Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy has represented Sri Lanka in international events in the following countries:
In 1988 - Japan
In 1989 – Hong Kong
In 1990 – South Korea
In 1991 – Malaysia
In 1992 – Philippines
In 1993 – Macau
In 1994 – Chinese Taipei
Since then with the assistance of its Chief Advisor Venerable Elle Gunawansa Thero, the late President Ranasinghe Premadasa, Honourable Ministers Nanda Matthew, the late Gamini Dissanayake, the late Lalith Athulathmudali and Ranil Wickremasinghe Wushu was successfully registered as the 44th National Sport of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in 1987. Through tireless efforts and with the assistance of state officials such as Deputy Director General of Schools Sports Sunil Jayaweera and Driector of Sports Olivia Gamage, Wushu was introduced and accepted as a School Sport in 1990 and the Sri Lanka Schools Wushu Federations was formed with Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera as the Founder and Technical Director.
Subsequently in 1993 as a result of continual requests made by Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera and the Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy since 1990, the Sri Lanka Wushu Federation was formed affiliated to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports as the controlling body for Wushu in Sri Lanka and to provide relief to the Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy which had been carrying the responsibility of being the gatekeeper for Wushu in Sri Lanka since 1975.
Today the Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy under the leadership of Sifu Prasanna Jayaweera has achieved many milestones to its credit.
The Sri Lanka National Wushu Academy therefore is the trail blazing National Academy that has been instrumental in establishing Wushu in Sri Lanka and elevating it to the standards in which it is today.
Thank you for stopping by this page and taking the time to read through our achievements.
